When the EPA evaluates a contaminated area and determines it poses significant risks to people or the environment, it may place it on the National Priorities List (NPL). Sites placed on the NPL are candidates for cleanup under the Superfund program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There’s at least one Superfund site in every state except North Dakota, and according to EPA estimates, more than 50 million Americans live within 3 miles of an NPL site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
